Lilium Species Foundation

The Lilium Species Foundation (LSF) is a separate, independent nonprofit organization that continues the spirit and legacy of the late lily culturist Eddie McRae and his Species Preservation Group (SPG), which was established under the auspices of the North American Lily Society (NALS). While LSF is not organizationally affiliated with either SPG or NALS, it shares their foundational mission: the study, cultivation, and preservation of true Lilium species. The Foundation was created in recognition of McRae’s vision to unite people worldwide who are dedicated to the conservation of wild lilies and the safeguarding of their genetic diversity for future generations.

Eddie McRae was deeply devoted to the study and preservation of true lily species, and it was his vision to bring together individuals from around the world who shared a passion not merely for lilies in general, but specifically for the conservation and cultivation of wild Lilium species. The Lilium Species Foundation was created in the spirit of this vision, carrying forward his commitment to international collaboration, species preservation, and the safeguarding of these remarkable plants for future generations.

LSF is dedicated to the preservation of Lilium species both in cultivation and in the wild. We work to increase the availability of true lily species to gardeners, conservationists, and land managers through ethical propagation and the distribution of seed and bulbs. In parallel, we seek opportunities to protect and restore natural habitats and to improve the conservation status of Lilium populations in their native environments.

The Foundation is based in Washington State, United States, and was founded by Bret Hansen and Gordon Hogenson.. You can find us on Facebook in the Lilium Species Foundation group.
